Gamaliel Earles birth is estimated to be between 1710 to 1720. There is no known birth record. His birthplace may be in Virginia or England. The exact date and location are not known.

Gamaliel married Martha Martin but the date and location are unknown. There is no known marriage record.

Gamaliel and Martha were living in Fishing District of Granville County, NC when their daughter Elizabeth was born in 1749.

Records:

  • He is mentioned in the will of William Eaton in Granville co., NC in 1759.
  • He purchased land in Granville Co., NC in 1761 and sold it in 1762.
  • In 1763, his name appeared on a petition to the governor of North Carolina.
  • He was on the tax rolls of Granville Co., NC, in 1758, 1760, 1761, 1762, 1763, 1769, and 1771 but was not on it in 1775.
  • In 1772, he purchased land in Bute Co., NC, and wedges in 1773.

Bute Co., NC, was formed from Granville Co., NC, in 1764 and then became part of Warren Co., NC, in 1779. This is why his death place is shown as Bute Co., NC.

Gamaliel probably died shortly after 1773. The last record we have of him was him buying wedges in 1773. His death place is probably Bute Co., NC, where he was last known to be living. There is no known death record.

Quoted From the book: History and Genealogy of the Earles of Secaucus

pg. 72 – Land patent records show that there was a William Earle, apparently a young unmarried man, in Northumberland Co., Va., in 1653. There was also a James Earle, George Earle, and a Gamaliel Earle in the same Coounty.
pg. 254 – There is a record of a William Earle in Northumberland County (Westmoreland) in 1653. We may also mention the names of George, Gamaliel, and Enoch, in Virginia, at about this time. The last died in Frederick County, where his will is recorded.

These dates are much earlier and may mean there were generations of Gamaliel Earles.

Traditions in a number of families that descend from Gamaliel state there is a relationship with the John Earle (abt.1614-1660) family of Somerset, England, who immigrated to what is now Westmoreland County, VA, before 1640. However, the Westmoreland County John Earle family is well documented, and Gamaliel does not appear to be a direct descendant.

Granville, Bute, Warren County, NC, and Mecklenburg County, VA, real estate, tax, census, and marriage records also list Thomas, Elisha, James, Obadiah, Sarah, Frederick, and Jesse Earl(e)(s), all likely children of Gamaliel and Martha.

Research Note:

His given name, Gamaliel, is a biblical name. A Pharisee named Gamaliel is mentioned in the Bible in Acts chapters 5 and 22. Gamaliel was the teacher (Rabbi) of Paul the Apostle. His name could also have been a mispronounced or misspelled version of Gabriel. There are several men named Gabriel Earle in English records. This shows that the Earle family used Gabriel in successive generations.

  • Gabriel Erl was baptized in 1601 in Wiltshire, England.
  • Gabrel Earle was buried 1661 in Collingbourne Kingston, Wiltshire, England.
  • Gabriel Earle buried in 1697 in Heston, Middlesex, England
  • Gabriel Earle apprenticed in 1744 to John FRY at Brinkworth, Wiltshire.
  • Gabriel Earle was Buried in 1762 in Brinkworth, Wiltshire, England
