Assignment of dower to Matilda, late the wife of William de Erlee, of his lands in cos. Berks and Oxford, made by the escheator and by John Bont, William Trol, John Grey, Adam atte Halle, Gregory de Loden, and John de Wodehull, on March 10, 1 Edward II.; to wit an upper room (solarium) with two cellars at the head of the hall on the south, with the wardrobe beyond la Wyteyate and a part of a kitchen on the south as marked out by metes and bounds, together with all that plot of land between the said upper room and kitchen as set out by bounds; and the little stable and granary near la Whyteyat; a grange called ‘le Heybern,’ with free ingress and egress through the gates of the court, and with all the plot lying in breadth between the grange of the court and the field called ‘Haddelond,’ and in length between the park there and the wood of Sir John de Erlee, and with another plot between la Whyteyat and the gateway (porticum) of the great grange as set out by bounds; a new chamber with an old stable and another house called ‘the cart house’ (domus caretarum), with all the plot between the corner of a cart house as far as la Whyteyat as set out by bounds, saving always to the heir of the said William free ingress and egress from the hall to the chapel there, which chapel is common to the heir and to the said Matilda for the celebration of divine service, in the casements and maintenance of the same; also a corner of the great garden towards the gate of the Shepcroft, with a small curtilage adjoining the garden as enclosed by hedges (hays) and ditches, and with another curtilage called ‘Paradis,’ together with a fishpond (vivario) in the same on the east near the hedge of the said park as set out by bounds, together with a plot beyond the kitchen adjoining the said curtilage called ‘Paradis;’ which house and plots and curtilages are assigned to her for the third part of the chief messuage, as they are valued at 8d. yearly, deducting reprises and other necessaries for the maintenance of the same. Also she shall have reasonable easements in the bake-house, and in another house where there is a cider-press (pressura cisarie). Also she is bound to repair and sustain a third of the said houses. She is also assigned these culture: la Breche and Shepcroft near the garden, which contain 21 acres of arable land, saving always to the heir the way going from the wood of Sir John de Erlee to the park, which are of the yearly value of 7s., price of an acre 4d.; the culture called ‘le Chaddelond,’ ‘Ponyngeslond,’ and ‘Eliotes Innome,’ which contain 21 acres, of the yearly value of 7s., price of an acre 4d.; 6 acres in the common field of Erlee in Ailwardesham, which are of the yearly value of 18d., price of an acre 3d.; one acre on Fethulle extending to le Smalwey near the land of Isabella Adam, of the yearly value of 3d.; 6 acres and 1 rood in la Worthe, of the yearly value of 18½d., price of an acre 3d.; 3 acres in Spillemannesbrome towards Foxele, of the yearly value of 9d., price of an acre 3d. Also there are assigned to her of the mowing meadows a third of the meadow called ‘le Eyet’ near Lodene on the north, of the yearly value of 2s., price of an acre 18d.; a third of the meadow called ‘Berneye’ of the yearly value of 12d.; an acre of meadow called ‘Levegares-acre,’ of the yearly value of 18d.; two acres of meadow in la Dwolemede of Burgham, of the yearly value of 3s., price of an acre 18d. for all the meadow there and at la Reye. Also there are assigned to her of the several pasture 2 acres in Loycroft on the south, of the yearly value of 20d., price of an acre 10d.; 3 acres of pasture called ‘la Reye,’ of the yearly value of 2s. 6d., price of an acre 10d., whereof a moiety is assigned to her in recompence for the park, which remains in the heir’s possession. There are also assigned to her 6s. of rent yearly from the fishery in the Thames; and a third of 8 sticks (stikharum) of eels from the rent of the water of Lodene, which part is of the yearly value of 102/3d.; and 1¼d. for a third of a rent of 4d. from a plot of meadow near that water; 5s. 6d. of rent from free tenants there, to wit from Michael le Cornmangere, 2s.; from John Lorshe, 2s.; of Elias Mogge, 18d. Also the rents and services of Richard Dollyng, a customary tenant, of the yearly value of 7s.; also two horseshoes (ferra pedalia) from the head-rent (redditu capitagii) of Walter son of Richard Dollyng and Adam his brother, of the yearly value of 4d.
There are also assigned to her in the town of Wytele of 21 acres in Bromcroftes, Whytlyngwode, and Crapoldes Inmone (sic); to wit 3½ acres in Bromcroftes near Puriham, of the yearly value of 21d., price of an acre 6d.; 3½ acres in Whytlyngwode and Crapoldes Inmone (sic), of the yearly value of 21d., price of an acre 6d.; 3 acres and 1⅓ roods of meadow in Landme and Wyneteye, of the yearly value of 5s., price of an acre 18d.; and 7s. 71/6d. of rent from certain free tenants there, to wit from the ten[ement of] la Rouk, 3s.; from John de la Marche, 4s. 71/6d.
There are also assigned to her in the vill of Newenham, co. Oxford, 2 acres of arable land, of the yearly value of 8d., price of an acre, 4d.; a third of a pasture for 61 sheep, of the yearly value of 182/3d.
Assignment of dower of the said Matilda in co. Southampton made by the king’s escheator in that county and by Thomas de Sandford, John Bemound, Thomas Stake, and John Stake, on April 5, in the first year of the reign of king Edward; to wit a grange opposite the hall at Cosham near the bakery, with a curtilage near the grange, as appears by a ditch through the middle of the curtilage, and with a plot of land between the hall and the grange, to wit from the corner of the bakery in a direct line to a spinny (spinetam) opposite, together with free ingress and egress to the said grange; and the said grange with the curtilage and plot afore said is worth yearly 4d. There are assigned to her 8½ acres of arable land on the south side of Portesdoune, whereof 3 acres lie in Barforlong, one acre in the furlong (in forlango) of Gastone, one acre extending to Kenesheye, 2 acres lie in Putteshegh, and one acre extends from the east to the west, extending to the king’s highway from Cosham to Portesdoun, and half an acre on the north of the way from Drayton to Cosham, each acre being worth 3d. yearly. There are also assigned to her 8 acres of arable land on the north side of Po[r]tesdoune, whereof 5 acres lie in la Thornes, and 3 acres extend from east to west, extending towards the land of Drayton, each acre being worth 1d. yearly. There are also assigned to her 2s. 10d. of the rents of assize, to wit, from Richard Brumman, a free tenant, 2s. 3d.; and from the ten[ement] of Pokebroke, 7d. to be received from Thomas de Sandford. There are also assigned to her a third of a pound of cumin, of the yearly value of ½d.; a quarter of a pound of pepper from the tenement of Richard le Baillif, of the yearly value of 3d.
